Free training program prepares people for redevelopment work

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The City of Toledo is teaming up with The Source and Owens Community College for a job training program to get people certified to work with companies doing environmental remediation work.

On Friday, 27 people received certificates for a 4-week training course on hazardous waste operations and emergency response, general industrial safety, asbestos abatement, and lead awareness and deconstruction techniques. Those certificates are compliant with OSHA and the Ohio Department of Health, and will qualify them to work on Brownfield redevelopment projects.

The training is being paid for through a $200,000 grant the city secured from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

"It means a lot," said program graduate Levon Townsend. "I really can't afford to go to school, so it's good the government did provide us with schooling so we can pursue a career."

There will be two additional sessions for this job training program. For more information, call 419-936-3015.

Valentine's Day, a day to celebrate love, turned into a day of heartbreak. A shooter stormed into a Florida high school, opened fire, and killed 17 people. Many of the victims were sweet children, children who I see my innocent baby girl growing into.
