Eye Citizen service comes to all of Toledo

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

For about a year it was tested in the Old Orchard neighborhood in West Toledo, but now anybody in Toledo who wants to keep a closer watch on police activity in their area can sign up for a free service.

The active block watch concept is being put into action by way of Eye Citizen, which allows people to receive a text message and/or an e-mail message about police calls near their home.

Legislation for the city to allocate $50,000 for the program to go citywide is being held up because of information coming to light about Councilman Tom Waniewski having a stake in a company involved in Eye Citizen. Speaking with Waniewski, he says the goal all along has been to better inform Toledoans who are concerned about their safety.

"If you put in an address, it will immediately get a half-square mile around the address you get in," he said. "It'll allow you to put two more addresses, so if you want to check on a loved one in another part of town you can do that."
