Extreme makeover for pediatric chemo room needs donations

(Toledo News Now) -

An extreme makeover is scheduled for a room at Mercy Children's Hospital, and the group doing it is looking for help to bring smiles to the faces of pediatric cancer patients.

The infusion room is where the patients receive their chemotherapy. Now Comforting Hearts wants to give that room a complete makeover.

"We want to update it a little bit and add some exciting new games, some new media, new TVs," said Emily Hayman, president of Comforting Hearts.

And that's not all. The organization also wants new, comfortable recliners, new cabinets, carpet and paint to make the room more cheerful for patients and their families.

Comforting Hearts was created by Kele Palitta after she lost her 7-month-old to cancer.

"They discovered through that process that one of the things that was sort of missing as the comfort factor," Hayman said. "They wanted to bring joy and happiness to families of children who are suffering from cancer."

Staff at Mercy Children's Hospital say the makeover means a lot to the department, and they are excitedly waiting for the children's faces when the big reveal takes place.

"We're just really excited that someone actually came forth and volunteered to do this for our kids here," said Pamela Pettee, nurse case manager.
