Kasich's transportation plan includes 10 NW OH road projects

(Toledo News Now) -

Gov. John Kasich's Jobs and Transportation Plan is expected to deliver 41 major projects, creating possibly 60,000 new jobs investing $3 billion in the state.

Over the next six years in northwest Ohio, the state will invest more than $495 million on 10 new projects. One major project estimated to cost $195 million, is reconstructing and upgrading various portions of Interstate 75, including adding a lane between Perrysburg and Findlay. Adding an additional lane will improve traffic flow and could start within the next two years - 13 years ahead of schedule.

Kasich has recommended that other projects be moved up, such as the McCord Rail Crossing, for safety reasons. One notable project will be the new interchange on 475 at Central Avenue so drivers will not have to cross so many lanes of traffic.

Drivers are thrilled to hear projects to improve the commute could be completed sooner.

"A third lane will definitely help traffic move both north and south. This highway has needed it for years," said Don Staczek.

Funding for the multiple projects will be split between bonds backed by Ohio Turnpike profits, as well as federal, state and local sources. The goal is to eliminate delays and improve the economy.

"[It] really opens up this region for opportunity. The easier freight moves around, the more attractive this region is to manufacturing," said Todd Audet, deputy director for ODOT.

Staczek lives next to the highway and says he looks forward to getting around faster, but worries about the extra noise a third lane could bring.

"If they're going to add a third lane, if there is increases in traffic, I would like to have a sound barrier put up," said Staczek.
