National softball tournament brings business to Findlay

FINDLAY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A national softball tournament starts Thursday, but it's already having an impact on the city of Findlay.

The ASA National Softball Tournament will be in Findlay until Sunday. More than 500 girls on 35 teams, and their families, from six states, means hotels are booked solid and restaurants are packed.

"We have the best facility in the state of Ohio, and now on the national level, they're recognizing us and bringing in teams from all over the place," said Tournament Director Jim Welch.

The tournament is a national qualifier. Teams are coming to play in Findlay for more than one reason.

"We bid on the tournament two years ago and we were accepted for the bid because of, 1) for our location, and 2) because of our past success of local, state inside tournaments," Welch explained.

The attention is providing more than an immediate boost to the local economy, but a boost that will hopefully be felt for many years to come.

"Hopefully these teams that aren't necessarily from the region, but they're from other states will go and say, ‘Hey, we had this great tournament in Findlay. It was really well-run. They had wonderful facilities,'" said Mayor Lydia Mihalik. "They're all visiting Findlay, one of Ohio's best-known towns, and we're rolling out the red carpet for them."
