Grant gives Wood County village dash cam technology

LUCKEY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

New technology is on its way to a small Wood County village. In just a few weeks, dash cams will be installed in police vehicles.

While it may not seem like a big deal, the Luckey Police Department relies on grant money for new technology and has been chasing after this for the past year.

"For a small town, you know, it's a big deal, it's a big thing," said Police Chief Daniel Whiting.

Whiting says traffic violations are the most common motor vehicle crime in Luckey. He believes dash cam video will help officers prove crimes in court.

"You're always going to have someone that's going to dispute the facts. With this device, we'll be able to supply the courts with the proper evidence they need," explained Whiting.

The chief says their dash cam will be funded through a $5,000 grant. The department depends on grant money and operates on what the chief calls "a shoestring budget."

"When it comes to getting technology out here, you know, small town small budget, you know, a lot of this equipment is expensive. So we rely on grants as a main source for us to procure this type of technology we couldn't otherwise afford," said Whiting.

It's technology officers hope will help them better protect and serve.
