N. Ky. AmeriCorps programs receive service grant

FRANKFORT, KY (FOX19) -

Three Northern Kentucky AmeriCorps programs will receive part of a $3.8 million service grant dedicated towards helping tutor students, providing financial literacy resources and more.

AmeriCorps is a national service program that serves faith-based and non-profit organizations with educational, environmental and safety needs.

On Wednesday, the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services announced programs in the commonwealth who will benefit from the grant money.

Kentucky College Coaches in Highland Heights will receive $263,900, which is a peer program for college students and recent graduates to help high school students navigate the steps from high school to college.

Also in Highland Heights, the Kentucky Service Corps will receive $20,000. Members are college students and citizens providing much-needed service to non-profits, schools, local and state government agencies across Kentucky.

A new program called MoneyCorps in Covington will receive $132,450, providing those disadvantaged with access to financial literacy resources and services to improve their financial literacy.

"The stories of success as a result of this kind of service are incredible," Cabinet for Health and Family Services Secretary Audrey Tayse Haynes said. "Through these grants, local citizens are addressing local needs."

In total, 12 Kentucky programs will benefit from the service grant.

The Kentucky Commission on Community Volunteerism and Service, part of the cabinet, administers Kentucky's AmeriCorps programs.
