Fremont Festival bringing War of 1812 to life

FREMONT, OH (Toledo News Now) -

It's a festival 200 years in the making. This weekend, Fremont is honoring American history with an event most of us will only see once in a lifetime. Folks in Fremont are stepping back in time this weekend to celebrate the War of 1812.

It's hard to miss preparation for the Fort Stephenson Bicentennial, a replica fort, nearly 100 feet long now stands tall on the grounds of the old Fremont Middle School. Organizers say the location has a very special meaning for our country's independence.

"When they got to Fort Stephenson, which sits on this site and the library site behind us, they met with a force a 160 men who successfully defended the fort and defeated the British and sent them packing back up the river," said Bicentennial Commission Chairwoman Katherine Rice.

The festival, which sits just across the street from the Sandusky County Veterans Memorial, will honor American war heroes, both living and deceased, in addition to a parade and fireworks.

"The events are going to be going from 9 in the morning to 10 at night, or 10:30 at night, so it gives everybody an opportunity to see our community and appreciate it for what a great community it is," said Fremont Mayor Jim Ellis.

City leaders say this could be great news for locally-owned businesses.

"Our store here is 150 years old, so it's part of a big tradition," said Grund Drug Store Pharmacist Jeff Osborne."The festival hopefully will bring people downtown, hopefully increase our foot traffic."

Grunds is one of several stores offering a gift or special discount to customers this weekend through the festival.

The City of Toledo is apologizing to a man after they billed him for cutting grass on public property near his home.  Anthony Davis and his wife have lived in their home in south Toledo since 1995. The grass in the cul-de-sac outside their home is often overgrown. Davis normally does not mind cutting it himself.  "Just so that we don't look like we're living in some type of jungle or something," Davis said. However, recently the grass grew up to his knees.
