Sylvania students getting healthier meals

Students in the Sylvania school district will notice more fruits and vegetables on their plates this year as changes are being made to school menus.

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) - Students in the Sylvania school district will notice more fruits and vegetables on their plates this year as changes are being made to school menus.

Dawn Miller has three children in the district and another son who just graduated. Her daughter Claire, a fifth-grader, is looking forward to the change.

"The food was okay, but I felt like it needed to be healthier," Claire said.

The district's Food Service Director Joseph Shamy agrees. Shamy says they are striving to achieve a balance between the wants and nutritional needs of the students. Now every school in the district will be offering fresh salad daily. All fruits and vegetables will be purchased locally and delivered fresh every day.

"We always as parents, I think, are trying to do our best to make sure our kids eat healthy and stay fit and active," said Dawn Miller. "I completely believe in trying to eat as much fruits and vegetables [as possible] and trying to limit the sweets."

The cost of lunch for students will not increase this year. The new menu changes will kick off the first day of school, Aug. 22.
