Farmers recovering from severe summer weather

WOOD COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

It's been an unusual summer for weather, and farmers in Wood County say it has resulted in some good and bad news for crops.

"There's a field right down the road from us that's just beautiful," said Shelli Morlock. "Then you go down the other way on the road and you've got water damage and you can see the strips or the ends that are completely drowned out."

The rain and winds have damaged some fields this season, but farmers like Morlock explained that it doesn't necessarily mean there's not enough to go around.

"We've had a good opportunity for some of that corn to straighten itself, and the corn's doing beautifully right now," Morlock said.

"Corn's a grass crop, generally speaking, and those kinds of crops like a little bit cooler temperature and they can take a lot more water," explained Steve Speck, Wood County Fair board director.

But other crops aren't fairing as well as the corn, such as the beans.

"Where it was wet, it got wet again and again and again," Morlock said. "Some of those areas died out, so the bean crop is a little questionable."

There's a possibility that consumers may feel the effect of the damage.

"In this area, the beans don't look as good as they normally do," Morlock said. "I don't know how it is across the state, and I don't know out of state, either."
