Casino revenue to help repair Wood County bridges

WOOD COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Hundreds of thousands of dollars from Toledo's Hollywood Casino will be spent in Wood County. A top 10 list of the worst bridges countywide is currently being reviewed and casino revenue will be spent to help fix them.

One bridge in the middle of a residential neighborhood near the Wales and Glenwood intersection could be a contender. It is an old, heavily-traveled concrete bridge that is in desperate need of repair. It also could be considered dangerous. No sidewalks mean kids have to walk in the middle of the street to get to school down the road.

"I told my neighbors I think this is the busiest, small street in town," said Joel Schutte, who wants to see the bridge fixed.

This street, among many others, could become safer thanks to the casino. Wood County is estimated to receive about $750,000 in casino revenue. The money will go towards new engineering for the worst 10 bridges in the county.

According to county commissioners, many bridges were built back in the 1930s and fail to serve the current needs of the community.

"They were built for horse and buggies, and one-car families at those times. We now have much larger equipment, much bigger farm equipment, and the bridges are aging," explained County Commissioner Jim Carter.

Schutte says he wants his boys to have a safer way to get to school. He hopes a nearby bridge is selected and sidewalks are added. While he admits he is not a fan of the casino, he is happy how the money will be spent.

"I'm still sad to see northwest Ohio is putting so much money into the casino. I definitely did not vote for it, but it's nice to see that money coming back in a way we can use - a tangible use for us," said Schutte.

Commissioners say they will not depend on having the same casino revenue for long and want to make sure to invest where it counts.
