OTTAWA HILLS, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Columbia Gas began the pipeline improvement project in March in Toledo. Their work has now spread to the Ottawa Hills Area.

Crews are now working in the areas of Central Avenue and North Indian Road.

The $3.8 million project is part of a broader 25-year initiative to replace more than 4,000 pipelines across the state. Crews are moving across the Toledo area replacing the steel pipe, which is more than 50 years old. A specially-designed plastic pipe will take its place.

Columbia Gas says the upgrade comes with unique benefits.

"It's flexible, so it expands and contracts with the soil conditions, and it allows us to deliver gas at a higher pressure than we were previously able to," said Jason Copsey, external affairs specialist with Columbia Gas. "And, second, it lasts longer."

Residents in the area of Pembrooke Drive and Talmadge Road near Central Avenue will see crews working in their yards this week. Copsey says the work takes about two hours for each home, and crews finish it off with soil, straw and grass seed. Columbia Gas asks the residents' assistance in keeping the area watered.

According to Copsey, the project is on schedule and should be completed by the end of the year.
