TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Fire ripped through a home in central Toledo Wednesday evening, and the Toledo Fire Department says they have reason to believe it was arson.

An official with the department says there was no electricity going to the house, which was vacant and boarded up.

Christie Edwards lives across the street from the house on the 700 block of Hamilton that went up in flames around 6 p.m. on Wednesday. She says the sight reinforced worries she already has.

"I live right next door to an abandoned house, and that is my fear every day, that some situation will occur and something will happen to my family," said Edwards. "I have children; I am a homeowner, so that's a big concern in the city now."

The house on Hamilton is the latest in a growing trend of abandoned house fires in the city.

"One of the neighbors told me earlier that this house caught on fire back in January, but it was boarded up and all the doors were secure," said Fire Battalion Chief Rick Syrroka. "Right now, we have our fire investigator here. He's checking out the cause…We do know the house was vacant and there was no power going to the house, so it leads to questions about it."

Edwards is concerned for her home and her family's safety, but has faith the city is working to fix the arson problem.

"The city is doing a good job. They're doing the best that they can," she said. "There's so many new vacancies popping up that they can only do so much. The Land Bank program is doing a wonderful job leveling and demolishing the houses."

The fire is currently under investigation.
