BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Parents in Bowling Green will have to start paying for their children's extra-curricular activities.

The school board voted through the pay to participate proposal unanimously at their meeting Tuesday. Board members agreed that because the November and May levies failed, and with the uncertainty of state funding, it would be in the best interest of the district to enforce the policy.

For high school students, it will cost $100 for the first sport they play, $75 for the second, and $50 for the third. Middle school students will have to pay a flat rate of $50 for each sport. For clubs like drama and Quiz Bowl, it will cost members $25 per season or per performance.

There will also be a $350 cap per family, to help those with multiple students. Some parents were initially upset about the fee, but they understand that because the levies did not pass, the district needs to make changes.

"Thankfully, Dr. McVey and her team went and researched in the communities in the area, to see what it was that was being done, and then tried to find a happy medium for us," said board member Ellen Scholl.

The district will study the pay to participate program this year and make necessary changes in the future.
