Neighbors: BGSU students need to clean up their trash

BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

SomeBowling Green residents say students are to blame for throwing trash in theiryards, and now they're demanding the city put an end to it.

Pickingup the trash is becoming an everyday occurrence for people living next toBowling Green State University (BGSU). The permanent residents say they takepride in their houses and lawns, and wish people renting nearby felt the same.

JoanSlebos has lived there since the ‘70s, and says she's already dreading the messshe will be forced to deal with when school starts in a few weeks.

"Maybethey have a drink that they've been carrying with them, so they throw thecontainer down, or a paper that a sandwich has been in – those kinds of things,"Slebos said. "There are some other, less savory things I don't even want tomention."

Tensionsbetween students and permanent residents could ease with a few proposedchanges.

"Havea student-led cleanup campaign, so we're going to have students come out andserve as a litter patrol, going around the neighborhoods and picking up trashand litter," suggested City Councilman Daniel Gordon. "We're also going to behaving orientation sessions for renters, so when they come into theneighborhoods, we're going to teach them how to be good neighbors."

Residentswill have to wait and see if these ideas become a reality.
