Water main break brings unexpected costs to Maumee

MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Road repairs are expensive for cities, but emergency road repairs come at an even higher cost.

The City of Maumee's underground sewer system dates back as far as the 1910s, and is part of an aging infrastructure that requires plenty of inspection.

"We do have quite a few brick manhole structures that we survey on an annual basis to look at the integrity of the mortar joints," said Joe Camp, Maumee's service director. "It's always a concern when you have an older system that way, and you always try to be as proactive as possible."

With an aging underground system, water main breaks like the one on Illinois Avenue last week can cause more than just a traffic headache – they can be quite costly to fix.

"It's about $53,000 worth of emergency roadway repairs," Camp said. "The pavement was undermined so bad, we wanted to make sure we took into account any vehicular traffic safeties out there."

City council approved emergency funds Monday evening to cover the cost of the water main break. It's $53,000 the city wasn't expecting to spend, but it comes with the territory.

"There's always that possibility," Camp said. "There's no way that you can really investigate the integrity of a water main, because water is always running through the line. You just react to when they break and, fortunately, our crews did an excellent job in getting the repairs done in a timely fashion."
