Off-road bike park coming to in Jermain Park

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

For those who like to pedal their bicycles off pavement, a new BMX jump park is being built in Jermain Park in Toledo.

Most of the work is coming from volunteers, who have donated time and materials.

"A contracting company provided the trucking the equipment to push the dirt around and supply the dirt to us at no charge. The city did get involved with a little bit of machinery work," said Tim Burns, Toledo Parks and Forestry Manager.

The jump park is being added to the 7 miles of mountain bike paths connecting Ottawa and Jermain Parks, to attract bicyclists of all ages.

"We're hoping over the next year we get more program oriented, where we can do training programs, competitions. We hope to do 4 or 5 competitions next year," said Burns.

Many of the volunteers helping to pound the jumps into shape are from the Right Direction youth development program based in Bowling Green.

"Our program is centered around getting kids involved with the community and giving back using action sports as a catalyst," said Don DiBartolomeo.

DiBartolomeo believes the city is heading in the right direction.

"It's huge. We have a couple of skate parks in the area, but to have a place where parents can go ride mountain bikes and play tennis, their kids can come here and ride," said DiBartolomeo

The city is hosting a grand opening event for the park on Saturday, July 27, from 3 to 7 p.m.
