CT and MA police investigating body found in duffel bag

SUFFIELD, CT (WSHM) -

An afternoon hike for a group of teenagers turned into the hunt for the identity of a man found dead, wrapped in a plastic bag and sealed in a duffel bag just over the border in Suffield, CT.

Suffield police say they don't know how the man died, but they think the duffel bag has been sitting on the Quarry Ridge hiking trail for at least two or three days.

"It's a slightly decomposed body. With the heat and the weather, I do not have the ability to make that determination at this time," said Suffield police Chief Mike Manzi.

Suffield police say that there are currently no missing persons cases in their town and since they're on the border with Massachusetts, authorities there have also joined in on the investigation.

The teenagers called 911 around 2 p.m. Friday, telling police they smelled something rotting.

Suffield police responded to Quarry Ridge. After discovering the body, they called in the Connecticut State Police Major Crimes Unit.

Friday afternoon, as authorities investigated the area, officers stopped people going by and collected their names and numbers as part of their investigation.

The body was removed later Friday evening and sent to the medical examiner's office.

"I couldn't elaborate on the injuries. It's hard to tell. It's wrapped up in a black garbage bag and that was placed into a blue canvas duffel bag," Manzi said.

Police say this is a popular trail, especially among teenagers. They believe someone may have seen something key to the investigation.

Suffield police say the victim is a white male believed to be 25 to 30 years old.

If anyone has any information, they are urged to contact Suffield police at 860-668-3870.

The fate of an iconic landmark in one western Massachusetts town is in jeapordy.    The old train depot in East Longmeadow near the center of town is a very familiar sight to residents.  Built in 1876, it's image even adorns the town seal.   However, the fate of the land it sits on is up in the air, and so is the future of the depot.
