Oil spill at drill site in Sandusky County

Crews are in the process of cleaning up a minor oil spill in Sandusky County.

SANDUSKY COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) - Crews are in the process of cleaning up a minor oil spill in Sandusky County.

The spill occurred at an oil drill site in Rice Township, just north of Fremont, Wednesday night. A well casing owned by the drilling company M&M Royalty broke, and up to five barrels of crude oil leaked out.

The exact cause of the break has yet to be determined, but according to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), over 300 gallons of oil began leaking onto the field around 10 p.m. Wednesday. Lindsay Township first-responders were able to cap the well.

The investigation was given to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), and an inspector found no traces of oil in the local drinking water.

The ODNR supervised M&M Royalty's cleanup of the oil. Contaminated soil will be shipped away by the EPA.

No additional hazards are expected, and no residents were ever in danger.

The investigation into the cause is ongoing.
