Local church offers community farm

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A local church is providing more than just food for those in need, they're teaching people how to have healthier lives, starting at the dinner table.

The University Church in south Toledo moved to their Hill Avenue location three years ago. Since then, they've turned their property into a community garden so they can provide fresh vegetables to people in need – but that's not all.

"Helping people put food on the table and at the same time helping them learn how to grow their own food, and how to keep their health in shape so they're able to work, how to look after their children and educate their children well so that their children can move on and have a future – that's the way that our community will grow and develop, I think," said Pastor Julian Davies.

The church has individual family plots where people can grow their own gardens.

"Good food actually can be quite expensive," Pastor Davies said. "Although, if you grow it yourself and you know how to prepare it properly, you can provide very nutritious meals at very reasonable prices."

Athena Koza-March is one of the people getting help from the church, but she also uses what she's learned to help others.

"We get fresh fruits and vegetables from here and we pay it forward by turning stuff in," she said. "If you turn something in, you always get what you have in return, and what I believe is anyone can do something for someone else. I'm always willing to extend my hand."
