TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo City Council's Zoning and Planning Committee met Wednesday and reviewed a proposal for a 22-acre site along Spencer Street to be converted into a solar field, with power to be used by the Toledo Zoo.

At one time, the former elevator plant site was being targeted for an auto junk yard. If the proposal goes through that land between Spencer and the Anthony Wayne Trail would become a 2-megawatt solar array field.

Toledo Zoo Executive Director Jeff Sailer says it would provide roughly 30 percent of the zoo's electrical needs, and tapping into a renewable energy source would assist with the zoo's mission of being kind to the environment.

"The biggest energy users we have here are a lot of life support systems, that will be working in the aquarium, the polar bear area, things like that, to provide life support for the animals," Sailer said. "We have a lot of heating and lighting systems all around the zoo."

The Toledo Planning Commission is recommending approval of a request for a special use permit, subject to 13 conditions being met and a waiver. Council could vote on the proposal as early as Tuesday.
