Revised Bass Pro plans well received by businesses, residents

(WMC-TV) - New details were presented to the Memphis Downtown Commission for Bass Pro Shops Tuesday. A group met with the planning board and revised plans for signs, indoor attractions, and entrances.

"The footprint is a little bit larger than a city block, so it's like more than 300 square foot each side. It's huge. It's actually bigger than it appears," said Downtown Memphis Commission chair Paul Morris.

They say looks can be deceiving, and that could not be more the case with Bass Pro's plan for the pyramid.

In February, architects presented a plan for signage on the outside, but their plan met a lot of opposition.

"They listened very carefully and went back to the drawing board ... [They] came back with something that I think a lot of the people who were concerned before are embracing now," said Morris.

Illuminating the signs on the north side of the pyramid, facing Mud Island, will be included in the plans.

"And the other signs have been substantially redesigned in a way that makes the Pyramid the brand and the focus," said Morris.

Also coming: A Sky Ride on the northwest corner and an enclosed elevator that will run along the Pyramid, similar to the Arch in St. Louis. Also, plans include to open the space in the top of the building.

"And up on top there's gonna be a restaurant, bar, with over hangs to look out onto the Mississippi River," said Morris.
