Massive hole causing problems in west Toledo

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A hole caused by a water line break at Grantwood and Yellowstone in west Toledo is causing traffic problems and forcing residents to be on high alert.

The area is closed due to a massive hole that formed Monday around 2 p.m. after excavation during repairs on a sanitary sewer line led to a 6-inch water line break. In the process of repairing a sewer line, crews were trying to remove controlled density fill from the water line and cracked it.

There is a boil advisory for residents for the next four days. Since it took a few hours for the water supply to be cut off, several homes had sewage back-up and water flooding basements and driveways.

City workers worked Tuesday trying to get to the source of the problem and replace the 15-foot section of the water main line.

While Public Utilities Director Dave Welch says there's no concrete timeline to complete the repairs, neighbors are on edge wondering if they'll have more clean-up on their hands.

"I'll be worried until they get this closed off. Maybe the water main's going to break again and maybe we're going to have more water in the basement," said Jim Williamson.

Williamson says he's also worried about a recent sewer repair job in front of his house, where the patchwork pavement is already showing signs of wear and tear.

"We're a little worried about this one over here. We don't know whether or not it's broken through again. It kind of looks like the stuff is washing away there," said Williamson.

According to Welch, considering the recent stretch of rain, other problems are likely to pop up with older sewer and storm water lines.

"We had 16 days of rain, so it's putting pressure on the system, closing it back and forth," said Welch. "Anything that had a small hole, small crack, now can become a bigger one."

Welch says all utility lines in that neighborhood will be scoped to make sure there aren't any further complications.
