OTTAWA COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Despite the hot weather, the Ottawa County Fair kicked off Monday on Route 163 in Oak Harbor.

Temperatures are expected to rise to over 90 degrees at least four times this week, so people at the fair are taking extra precautions to protect their livestock.

Nine-year-old Duane Perkins sprayed his pigs with water to help keep them cool and make sure they're ready for an early morning show.

"[It's important to keep them cool] so they don't get injured or start getting way too hot and stop breathing," Perkins said.

Kirsten Dessaeu added that pigs don't have sweat glands to cool themselves down.

It's the same case with other livestock at the fair. Fans are blowing on horses, goats are being sprayed down, and rabbits have cold bottles of water to lie next to.

Handlers say they are cooling their animals down every hour to make sure they're in tip-top shape.

Humans need to be cautious and avoid getting too hot this week, as well.
