(WMC-TV) - He is a Memphis teen with a lot of talent. In fact, he caught the eye of the judges with "America's Got Talent".

Paul Thomas Mitchell made it past the auditions and is going to Las Vegas to compete on the NBC hit show and try to win the $1 million prize.

When Mitchell auditioned, he played an original song.

"I want to come and hug you!" said AGT judge Heidi Klum. "All I have to say is, John Mayer better watch out."

"I like the tune and I think you sold it as a performer, so you're a double whammy," agreed judge Howard Stern. "So I have high hopes for you in this competition."

"It's been a blessing, you know, it's been crazy just for the exposure," said Mitchell, who grew up in Memphis. He attended Holy Rosary Catholic School and Saint Benedict at Auburndale High School.

Mitchell now has plans to attend a music school.

"I've been here for 18 years," he said. "Memphis is who I am. That's why I am here now."

Perhaps what hit the judges as much as his song was the story he shared on the show.

"I grew up both my mom and dad being alcoholics and my dad changed his life around for me to have the life that I can and it's just for him," explained Mitchell. "I don't want anyone to think my mom is a bad person. My mom is great. She loves me and I love her too, love my dad just the same you know?"

Paul Thomas Mitchell is not the only contestant from the Mid-South on America's Got Talent this season.

Milton Patton is an electrician from Forrest City, Arkansas. He blew the judges away singing a country song. Action News 5 plans to speak with him later this week.

You can cheer on Mitchell and Patton Tuesday and Wednesday nights as they perform on America's Got Talent. It airs on WMC-TV5 at 7 p.m.
