TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

On Thursday, Toledo Mayor Mike Bell filed his petitions at the Lucas County Board of Elections, in his bid for re-election this year.

Bell says during his term in office the city budget has made a dramatic turnaround, the local economy has rebounded, and Toledo has become a safer city, and he's hoping voters will give him another four years in office.

The mayor says when he took office the city had a $48 million deficit, and in 2012 the city closed out the year with a $5 million surplus. He also says during his term, 6,100 new jobs were added in the city, and Toledo experienced a 23 percent decline in crime last year.

"What we've done, without raising taxes, is being able to give them the protection we believe they can afford to have at the time, and still meet the goal of not raising their taxes."

Challengers Anita Lopez and Mike Collins have already filed petitions. Joe McNamara and Alan Cox are expecting to file on Friday, which is the filing deadline for those wanting to run for mayor and also candidates for the six at-large council seats.
