Detroit reopens following sinkhole repair in central Toledo

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Despite several rain delays, repair of the sinkhole at Detroit Avenue and Bancroft Street is now complete and the intersection has reopened to traffic.

Crews started repaving the area at 4 a.m. Thursday. Southbound lanes on Detroit and turn lanes from Bancroft reopened late Thursday afternoon, once the concrete surrounding manhole covers set.

All straight lanes on Bancroft reopened to traffic last week. Northbound lanes on Detroit reopened earlier this week.

City officials say two sewer lines that were built in 1891 broke July 3, causing pavement to crumble. The sinkhole even swallowed a woman's car. Crews were able to rescue her and she received only minor injuries.

The city spent approximately $50,000 just repaving where the ground caved in at the intersection.

According to officials, they are monitoring the sewer lines with cameras to prevent something like this from happening again.
