(WMC-TV) - Memphis Police are searching for suspects who robbed and then shot at two men walking home from a popular Cooper-Young neighborhood bar.

One of the victims had just celebrated his birthday at the Young Avenue Deli. He and his friend were almost home when the suspects struck.

"And all of the sudden I heard behind me, 'Get down, get down, get down.' And then I turned and there was a gun in my face," said victim Christopher Williams.

It happened around 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Two suspects forced the pair to the ground and robbed them of their wallets and cellphones.

As the suspects walked away, Williams did something police would say never do. He grabbed one of the suspects by the ankle to try and stop him. That is when Williams says one of them used his gun.

"They just said, 'kill 'em' and took a shot, so," said Williams.

Fortunately, neither he nor his friend were hit before the gunmen got away in a car driven by a third suspect.

"I was kind of more angry than anything. It was like why, why is this happening to me?" said Williams.

According to the Crump Station precinct, three or four similar robberies in a 10 to 12 block area have occurred in recent months – but a connection has not been determined.

"I can't say I feel any less safe because it happens anyway – but the fact that it happened here, it's just surreal," said Williams.

The suspect descriptions are vague, but their getaway car was a white 1995 to 1998 Chevy Monte Carlo.
