Asbestos being cleaned up in east Toledo after house demolition

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The clean-up work is in full swing after two houses on Clark Street in east Toledo were torn down recently, and both contained asbestos materials.

Crews wore their protective gear as they loaded up the rubble and took it to an alternative dump site.

Irvin Clark, who lives on that street, says he knew the house at 844 Clark was not properly abated before it was demolished.

"Underneath the vinyl siding was asbestos shingle," he said. "The asbestos shingle was just covered up with vinyl."

Lucas County Treasurer Wade Kapszukiewicz oversees the Lucas County Land Bank program, and he says a private inspector failed to notice the asbestos before clearing the way for demolition.

"Unfortunately the vendor we worked with didn't do their job, just missed it. We have replaced them," Kapszukiewicz said. "We're going to bring in a new vendor and make sure it doesn't happen again."

Kapszukiewicz says in the case of 864 Clark, the asbestos was found, but it wasn't completely removed before that house was torn down.

For Irvin Clark, he's worried about potential health problems for families in the area.

"This created such a cloud that it engulfed this portion of the neighborhood," he said.

Kapszukiewicz says this is the first case of asbestos not being detected before demolition, as part of the Land Bank's massive vacant house demo program, with 500 houses taken down so far.

"Working with the city, we'll certainly participate in any follow-up to make sure the health of the neighborhood is sound."
