TIFFIN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

People living in Tiffin are keeping a close eye on the Sandusky River as it continues to rise.

"It's mostly storm water but it's all the way down through here. And the person down there, he lost both of his pumps last week and had some in his basement," said Tiffin resident Ed Story.

As of 9 p.m. Tuesday night, the river was at 8 and a half feet. Flood stage is 9 feet, and the river could crest at 10 feet Wednesday night.

"We're concerned here in Tiffin as to how high the waters are truly going to get," said Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz. "And there's even more rain that fell south and everything flows north into Lake Erie here in the Sandusky. So it is hard for us to gauge just how much rain the south of us got."

Downtown Tiffin flood walls are good up to 17 feet.  Sections of Tiffin, like Mechaniscsburg and by the YMCA, are more low-lying and vulnerable to moderate flooding.

If the water rises too much in those areas, evacuations could be ordered.

"I've lived in Tiffin my whole life and I can never remember a period of time when it has rained this many days, this much rain," said Mayor Montz.

The police and fire departments have the water level forecast on their computers at all times so they can monitor the situation. People living in low-lying areas are urged to check the city's web site and Facebook page.
