TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

On September 10, 1813, as the Battle of Lake Erie raged around him, Toledoan Peter Navarre carried dispatches between General William Henry Harrison and Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry.

Navarre later led a group of Kentucky sharpshooters to aid Perry during the battle, and was the escort for the lieutenant who returned with Perry's famous message "We have met the enemy and they are ours."

Because of his heroic acts during the battle, the East Toledo Historical Society and the Oregon Jerusalem Historical Society will commemorate the 200th anniversary of the battle on September 7 and 8.

Guests will have the opportunity to view Peter Navarre artifacts and meet reenactors playing Peter Navarre and his wife, Catherine Bourdeau. A second edition of the book "Peter Navarre, War of 1812 Scout - the Man Behind the Legend" will be released, and a Navarre family reunion will be held. The Navarre family will present Peter Navarre's original pistol to the Oregon Jerusalem Historical Society during a program on September 7.

Activities will be held at Navarre Park in Toledo from noon to 4 p.m. on September 7. The pistol presentation program will begin at 12:15 p.m.

Guests will have the opportunity to tour the Navarre Cabin on September 8 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Toledo Botanical Gardens.
