Petersburg runners raise $50K for cancer

(Toledo News Now) -

The 5th Annual Rose Run returns to Petersburg, Michigan, on July 20th, 2013.

The Rose Run was started by Petersburg native Jessica Cribbs, named after and in honor of her mother, Rose, who lost her battle with breast cancer in January of 2009.

The Rose Run has runner participating from across southeast Michigan, northwest Ohio, and internationally. Those who can't be in Petersburg on race day can join a ‘virtual' run. In the past 4 years, participants have ran in Boston, Los Angeles, Illinois, Indiana, Alabama, Wisconsin, Arizona, Virginia, Okinawa and Afghanistan. Last year's virtual race raised an additional $1000 toward the cause.

So far, the small town of Petersburg has raised more than $50,000 for breast and ovarian cancer research through the Rose Run.

This year's race, a part of Dave's Running Race Series, will included a 5k run/walk starting at 8:30 a.m., followed by a 1k fun run for kids at 9:45 a.m. Awards will be handed out at 10 a.m.

Online registration is open until July 6. Registration is $25 for the 5k run/walk and $10 for the kids' run. The kids' run does not include a t-shirt, but a prize will be given to all participating children.

Same day registration will be $30 for the 5k and $15 for the kids run. Registration will open at 7:30am on July 20th.

All proceeds from the event benefit The University Of Michigan Cancer Care Center, with a portion dedicated to The Volunteer Fire Department in Petersburg.
