Number of searchers for Elaina beginning to wane

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Elaina Steinfurth has been missing since June 2.

The eighteen month old toddler had been staying in a house with her mother Angela, who remains behind bars on an obstructing justice charge in connection with the case.

It was another day, another search for Elaina on Saturday.

This time folks spread out across Walbridge Park in South Toledo.

They also scoured the banks of the Maumee River.

"Right now we don't have any leads. So we're just searching anywhere we possibly can," said searcher Tiffany Lewis.

Law enforcement has focused its efforts in and around the river near the High Level Bridge.

If Elaina was dumped there, searchers believe it's possible the river's undercurrent may have dragged her body to the Walbridge Park area.

"It's just a baby. I have three kids myself and my son was kidnapped and murdered in '85," said searcher Michele Bryant.

Last weekend, human hair was recovered by a fisherman.

It's been turned over to authorities to see if there's a DNA match with Elaina.

Still, searchers hold out hope she's alive.

"Alive until I see different. She's alive to me," said searcher Marsha Losek.

But not everybody feels the same way.

The longer the Elaina mystery drags on, fewer searchers are showing up.

The ones at Walbridge Park want to send out a message.

"Bring Elaina home. We need searchers," said Ms. Bryant.
