Rainy weather may cost wheat farmers thousands

PEMBERVILLE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Localwheat farmers have been hit especially hard by the rainy weather lately. Theystand to lose thousands of dollars if things don't dry up.

Onefarmer in Pemberville says at this time last year, all 30 acres of his wheatfields were harvested.

"Rightnow, they're still pretty soft to touch, you can cut right through them," saidRoger Burchin, owner of Burchin Farms.

ButBurchin says you shouldn't be able to do that at this time of year. The kernelsshould be hard as rock. This lowers the quality, which could cut down on hisexpected income.

Eventhough this year's harvest has been delayed, Burchin says consumers shouldn'tnotice any spikes in wheat prices at the stores. He says the delay is anaggravation to farmers.

"Ialways say farming is a lot like going to Las Vegas," he said. "You pay yourmoney and take your chances."

Burchinsays all he needs is two days of sunshine to harvest his fields. By mid-July,if his crops aren't cut, he's looking at looking at losing thousands, but it'stoo early to tell how badly his crop has been damaged.
