Increased holiday crowds bring increased police patrol

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Some people are already filing into downtown Toledo to secure their spots for the fireworks show on the Maumee River. The expected big crowds are also bringing an increased police presence.

Toledo police say they want to make sure everyone looking for a safe and good time gets just that. They have mobile cameras in place and plenty of extra officers to make sure the only thing sparking in downtown are the fireworks, not problems or violence.

In a few hours, the Glass City skyline will be erupting with the sights and sounds of fireworks.

"I love the crowd. The fire works are fabulous, but I love being downtown for the fireworks. I'm really excited that this year we get to be here," said Rashelle Jaquillard.

Jaquillard and her family showed up early Thursday morning to secure a viewing spot for the show. They say they were pleasantly surprised to see the extra steps Toledo police have taken to make sure this Fourth of July is festive, fun and safe.

"I think it's fabulous. We've even seen them down Heatherdowns. I think they're fabulous. Whatever keeps the city and the citizens safe, I'm all for it," said Jaquillard.

Police say the cameras rolling won't be the only things they will use to keep an eye on crime. There will be extra officers patrolling on foot, motorcycle and by car downtown and in the surrounding areas.

"I think if we all just respect each other, and have a good time, that's what it should be all about. It's really not about us adults, it's more about the kids. And getting out here and causing trouble, it's not necessary," said Jaquillard.
