Sylvania Twp Police patrol homes while you’re away

SYLVANIA TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Sylvania Township Police Department has a program in place to check on residents' houses while they are away.

The house-checking program has been in effect since the 1970s, but not many Sylvania Township residents are aware of the program and its positive results.

The program helps inform the police department of the dates of the residents' vacation, as well as letting them know who else has a key to their home.  Police officers then can patrol their home twice a day - once during the day and once at night - and look for anything suspicious.

"I think that it would almost be a deterrent if some bad guys would actually see the police regularly check the house," said Police Chief Robert Boehme. "You never know what you may come home to."

Police officers not only check for intruders, but also look at any damages or problems that need immediate attention.

"The program is popular with long-time residents, but many newer residents aren't familiar with the service," said Boehme.

Chief Boehme has had experience with the house-checking program's success.

"When we went around there and opened it, we could hear somebody inside," said Boehme of one particular home check. "We were able to get inside and actually wait for the burglar to come to us. We caught a burglar red-handed in a house, just because we were familiar with the house because we were doing house checks."

This program runs all year long, residents who are interested in using the program can call the Sylvania Township Police Dispatch at 419-882-2055.
