Bowling Green Police working to hire, train 3 new officers

The Bowling Green Police Department could soon have 3 new employees, but it will be more than 9 months before those officers get out on the streets.

BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) - The Bowling Green Police Department could soon have 3 new employees, but it will be more than 9 months before those officers get out on the streets.

The department is currently conducting interviews with applicants who have already undergone written and physical tests. Those who make the cut will spend 16 weeks at the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy. After the patrol academy, new officers will head back to Bowling Green for another 12 weeks of training.

"[They will learn] how to make an arrest safely, how to drive a car, how to shoot a gun, how to defend themselves in certain situations. It's a pretty comprehensive academy. It's very military. It's like boot camp for police officers," said Bowling Green Police Major Tony Hetrick.

The department expects the new officers will be trained and on the road by April of 2014.
