PUTNAM COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The 17-year-old accused of killing two Putnam County brothers in May will be tried as an adult.

A judge ruled that Michael Fay will be tried as an adult for the murders of Blake and Blaine Romes after reviewing results of a competency exam. The Romes brothers were found dead on the afternoon of May 9 after an Amber Alert for the two and Fay was issued and later canceled.

Although murder charges could bring the death penalty for someone over the age of 18, Fay's age at the time of the alleged crimes means the maximum penalty he could face is life in prison without the possibility of parole.

With the decision to try Fay as an adult, the case is moved to Putnam County Court of Common Pleas. The prosecution will present evidence to a grand jury on Aggravated Murder charges sometime later this month.

"Clearly this case has touched the community, and there has been an emotional response to it. Blake and Blaine were well respected and well liked by a number of people; so a number of people have been hurt by what's occurred. And I think that throughout this process, hopefully some healing can occur and hopefully we can do something to help that healing," Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Todd Schroeder said after Tuesday's hearing.

Fay remains in jail on $5 million bond.
