City leaders seek flooding solutions in Tiffin

TIFFIN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Tiffin area has received a lot of rain recently, causing flooding in various parts of the city.

"Most of the streets behind the [Westgate] shopping center were under water," said Mayor Aaron Montz. "I had calls from residents saying they had a foot of water in their basement. It's not something we're used to in that area of town, so we're trying to find out what the cause of it is."

The mayor said he'll meet Tuesday morning with his superintendent of the Streets Department to figure out why the neighborhood took on so much water.

"We're hoping that the analysis comes back, was that it was just a freak act of Mother Nature," Montz said. "But regardless, we owe it to the residents to find if that was the case. We don't want to assume it was just the heavy rainfall that we received."

City council may use $10,000 in grant money to make improvements to Rock Creek to prevent major flooding, like what caused major damage to the YMCA in March and July of 2011.

That work would include removing overgrown trees and shrubs from the creek bed, and lining it with what's call ‘riprap' to encourage the water to get more quickly to the Sandusky River.
