Don't Waste Your Money: Durability of smart phones tested

(Toledo News Now) -

There are a lot of new smart phones on the market this year, from the Samsung Galaxy S4 to the HTC One, not to mention an iPhone 5 is coming out soon. Something few people talk about is which ones break more easily.

When you're deciding what smart phone to buy, you usually consider size, cost, and features. You don't think much about durability, but a new report says maybe you should.

Glass Breaks Easily

No one wants a smart phone with a shattered screen. But it happens all too frequently when we drop them, sit on them, or crush them in a purse.

Now, SquareTrade, the extended warranty company, has dropped, slid, and even submerged in water some popular phones.

The Results....

SquareTrade gives the new Samsung Galaxy S4 a 7 out of 10 when it comes to breakability, saying it is more prone to shattering than many other phones.

The older Galaxy S3 gets a 6.5, a little better, which mean it is less susceptible to breaking.

Apple's iPhone received a much better 5, with SquareTrade calling it "far more durable overall." Mac blogs credit the iPhone's thicker metal casing and smaller glass screen.

Doesn't That Stink?

From the doesn't that stink file comes why you shouldn't carry a smart phone without a case.

It's amazing how many people avoid cases because they like the sleek look of glass and aluminum. But a drop on a sidewalk is almost guaranteed to result in a shattered screen, and a replacement cost of at least $100.

Buy a case....the thicker the better.

My advice: If you are buying a phone for a child or teen, durability should be something you consider. It's also something to keep in mind if you're a bit clumsy like me, so you don't waste your money.
