FREMONT, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Terra Community College in Fremont is looking for ways to trim their budget. Wednesday, the board of trustees approved next years budget, with over $760 thousand dollars in cuts.

Terra Community College had just over 3,100 students enrolled last year. This year, there is a projected 5 percent drop in enrollment, which is why administrators decided to trim the budget.

The over $760 thousand dollars represent a 4.3 percent reduction. Terra administration will spend the summer looking for places where the needed cuts will be made, but the first thing to be reduced will more than likely be part time and adjunct faculty.

"Because of the reduction in enrollment, we don't anticipate that we will have as many courses to offer," said President Jerome Webster."And so we will reduce our personnel costs with the number of part time people that we have to hire."

The 5 percent enrollment drop off was not unexpected though, and school leaders say it is a common occurrence at community colleges.

"When the economy picks up, it's not uncommon for individuals who have been attending classes to stop out for a while, return to the workforce, or reduce the number of courses they can take at one time," said Webster.

Through the budget reduction process, Terra Community hopes the changes go unnoticed by the students here. And maybe in the end it might even turn out for the better.

"We're looking at how we can be efficient," said Webster. "And in doing so, we've reduced some of the personnel costs and other costs that we were incurring. And that in turn has allowed us to reduce the budget. So we're looking at it in a positive way."
