Oregon alum selected as next superintendent

OREGON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

After a month of searching, Oregon City Schools has their new superintendent.

The school board chose former student Dr. Lonny Rivera. They say the decision was a ‘no-brainer.' They voted for Rivera unanimously.

"We really didn't pick Lonny, the community did," said Board President PJ Kapfhammer. "You couldn't go anywhere without 20-30 people saying, ‘What are you waiting for? Lonny Rivera is our guy'…He's the guy to bring everybody back together. It's just that simple."

Rivera took his seat with the board, wiping tears from his eyes. He called the position the pinnacle of his career.

"It seems like I have been on a journey all over, and I have been in great places with great people," he said. "But truly, to me, to be home where my roots have been, that's where I'd like to be able to stay and to be able to watch kids grow, to be able to watch the community grow."

The board expects Rivera to make tough decisions, bond with the public, and help the district become an ‘Excellent with Distinction' district.

Rivera was chosen over Dr. Deb Piotrowski. He will spend his last day with Maumee City Schools on June 28. His first official day with Oregon is August 1, and he says he has expectations of his own.

"My goal for this district is to have a love for, have people love their jobs," he said. "I want kids to love being in school. I want that. It's such a big part of your life, why not enjoy every moment of it?"
