Cleveland company looks to build off-campus UT student housing

The site plan. The site plan.
TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A Cleveland-based development group has submitted a formal site plan to convert land at Dorr and Westwood into an off-campus student housing center.

The NRP Group filed the plan this week to the Toledo Planning Commission. The site would include construction of multiple buildings. Some 4-story, others 3-story buildings, and in total there would be 200 units and 596 beds.

While the University of Toledo is not involved with the proposal, Matt Schroeder with the University of Toledo Foundation says he's not surprised.

"We've seen a lot of attention over the past two to three years tied to student housing," Schroeder said. "Reason being a lot of the product within walking distance of our main campus is dated."

While Schroeder says he's excited about the possibility of a major new investment in the community, he considers the new housing site plan a double-edged sword.

"I think it's saying a lot about the direction the University of Toledo is going, but also gives me a little concern there's not enough demand to go around to support multiple housing projects."

Another area being targeted for off-campus student housing is along Bancroft, just east of the main campus.

The site plan will be reviewed by commission staffers before any recommendations are made.

After double overtime, the Toledo Walleye came out on top and beat the Indy 3-2 Thursday night for a sweep in the series. Even though the fish had a 3-0 lead in the first round playoff series, the toughest thing to do in hockey is to beat a desperate team on their home ice.  Halfway through a second overtime Kyle Bonis sets up Christian Hillbrich to score the game winning goal.  The Walleye now advances to the second round. They will play the winner of the Fort Wayne and ...
