Mid-Southerns deal with the heat

(WMC-TV) - People across the Mid-South are finding different ways to describe the heat. A heat advisory went into effect around 4:00 p.m. as heat index values stretched from 100 to 108 degrees.

"You have to dress cool, like something white. And this umbrella, it works more than just rain," said South Memphis resident Paul Speight holding an umbrella.

Bertha Mae Robinson, Curtis Washington and Sheila Cheatham have electricity and air conditioning.

But they chose a remedy under a big shade tree instead because of the cost of using utilities.

"MLGW just charging too much. Sometimes you just can't use the air," said Washington. "You got to learn how to keep cool. You ain't just gotta use your air conditioner in your house, run your MLGW bill up. You can get out the house, turn everything off."

MLGW asks anyone behind on their bill to notify the utility to work out a payment plan. The company has suspended cut-offs until the heat index drops.

"Stay hydrated. Stay cool," said resident Dr. Kenneth Robinson. "Don't just sit in an 'uncool' house. That's very, very dangerous, particularly for our elderly and our small children."
