TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A fired Toledo Assistant Principal plans to fight to get her job back by filing a lawsuit against Toledo Public Schools.

On Tuesday, the school board voted 4-1 to terminate the contract of Sandra Meeks-Speller. When the vote was cast, Meeks-Speller got up and walked out of the meeting without further comment.

Her attorney Dennis Grant, however, says they plan to appeal the board's decision to Lucas County Common Pleas Court. The lawsuit will be largely based on the board's rejection of a state referee's recommendation that they not fire Meeks-Speller.

Among the reasons for her termination was the accusation that Meeks-Speller was physically rough with students. Grant argues that she is being discriminated against because she's African American.

"They put her under extra scrutiny and surveillance that they did not apply to white members of the administration or the teaching staff," he said.

Grant also says they have pending complaints against TPS with the Ohio Civil Rights Commission and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to try to get Meeks-Speller's job back.

TPS leaders would not comment on the appeal at this time.
