Perrysburg Twp discusses fire levies early

PerrysburgTownship trustees are determining when two fire department levies will go on aballot.

Thetownship fire department is looking to renew a 1 and 2 mill levy. Townshipofficials were eyeing the November ballot for those levies, but ultimately, they decided to wait until next May.

The1 mill levy will generate about $525,000, and the second, for 2 mills, willgenerate $915,000. All funds would go toward fire operations.

FireChief Tom Brice met with trustees to discuss the ideal time to bring the issueto voters. He says it's early to discuss a May levy, but wanted to make surethey're planning ahead.

Sofar this year, the township's fire and EMS have made 697 runs, and the firedepartment went on 121 of those. The money generated by the levies will becritical to maintaining the same level of service.

"Itfunds our day-to-day operations," Brice said. "So in order to get the firetrucks out the door, get the ambulances out the door to the scenes where they'reneeded, we need that money to guide and fund those operations."

Votershave been supportive of both levies in the past. Brice says he wants to get theword out early about how important a yes vote is for residents' safety.
