OREGON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Oregon School Board is one step closer to knowing who their new superintendent is going to be. They held a "Meet the Candidates" night for the community Tuesday evening with the two final candidates.

The school board started their search last month, but they hope to have a decision made by Thursday.

"We want to move up," said Board President PJ Kapfhammer. "We want to be excellent, and then excellent with distinction. We want our ratings to go up, we want people excited to be a part of Oregon Schools again."

Kapfhammer is confident one of the two finalists is the answer, and both candidates believe they are qualified.

"I have eight years' experience as a superintendent," said Dr. Deborah Piotrowski. "I have vast budget experience, I'm on three state committees, which is the finance, the legislative, and the report card – those are the top three heavy hitters in the state."

The other candidate, Dr. Lonny Rivera, says he shouldn't be counted out, either.

"Knowing the community as well as I do, knowing the number of staff members that I know around here," he said. "My children play with a number of the kids here in the community. I think that's something that's hard to pick up speed on."

Both candidates already call northwest Ohio home, and Kapfhammer says that's an important quality.

"Community tie-in is a big thing, and I think either one of these individuals will have no problem going out in the community, getting to know people, getting them to support the schools and moving forward," he said.

After double overtime, the Toledo Walleye came out on top and beat the Indy 3-2 Thursday night for a sweep in the series. Even though the fish had a 3-0 lead in the first round playoff series, the toughest thing to do in hockey is to beat a desperate team on their home ice.  Halfway through a second overtime Kyle Bonis sets up Christian Hillbrich to score the game winning goal.  The Walleye now advances to the second round.
