Residents voice safety concerns as construction reroutes traffic

NAPOLEON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Safety is a growing concern in the city of Napoleon, as a new construction project gets under way sending traffic down more residential streets.

The closure of Scott Street at Lagrange Street has drivers finding alternate routes, but those who live in the area aren't happy with the ones they're choosing.

A stretch of Yeager Street has been used by a lot of trucks and traffic trying to get around the construction zone, but it's causing a danger for the neighborhood. You can even see tracks on the sidewalk. They drive fast and aren't able to make it around a curve.

"I won't even let my grandkids on the sidewalk because too many semis come down here. They're on the sidewalk. They're on the neighbor's yard," said Napoleon resident Janet King. "It scares me with my grandkids around. Way too scary."

King watches her grandkids during the day, and she isn't the only one frustrated by all the extra traffic.

"We got kids up and down this neighborhood and people just fly around that corner like its nothing," said resident Chris Getzinger. "One of these days, someone is going to get hit."

There are signs that say "no semis" and Napoleon police say they have increased patrols in the area. Still, some residents feel that's not enough.

"I think they ought to have someone down here 24/7 to stop them. We already had five semis down here this morning," said King.

Construction on Scott is scheduled to be complete by mid-December. Until then, residents will have to keep an eye on their sidewalks and kids.
