Firefighters raise money to help one of their own

METAMORA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Fireman's Challenge was held Sunday in Metamora.

Area firefighters from nine departments competed in different events, such as the broken hose contest.

They had fun but also helped one of their own.

The Challenge was hosted by the Metamora/Amboy Volunteer Fire Department.

They raised money to honor Dupree Hoge, a former firefighter on their force for five years.

He's been diagnosed with a rare disease called multiple system atrophy, also known as MSA.

It's a rare neurological disease attacking his body.

Only one in 100,000 people develop MSA.

"Right now he's bedridden. So he's at home in a bed. We got a full time nurse for him during the day," said Dupree's son Alan.

Last year, the Fireman's Challenge raised money for the 911 Memorial in Wauseon.

Helping Dupree this year was a no-brainer.

"Dupree was on the fire department, and as with all fire departments, he's a fellow brother. When a brother is in need, we all come together and try to come up with a solution to the problem. We all bond together as brothers," said Jason Taylor of the Metamora/Amboy Volunteer Fire Department.

Dupree's firefighting brothers raised $5,000 on Sunday.

The money will be donated in his name to Western Michigan University for MSA research.
