Lightning deserves respect, stay safe in a storm

(Toledo News Now) -

Summer is the peak time for thunder and lightning storms.

That's why the National Weather Service has declared this week lightning safety awareness week.

Last year 28 people died nationally from strikes.

One of them was an Ohio man doing yard work.

The number of fatalities continues to decrease, however.

Still, lightning strikes are one of the top three storm related killers in the United States.

Firefighters say head inside when there's a lightning threat.

"It's one thing people don't understand is that it can travel even if it looks like daylight outside. It will also hit you at that point too. When you hear thunder, get inside," said Chief Ray Kelbele of the Metamora Amboy Volunteer Fire Department.

The National Weather Service also says lightning injures more people than it kills.

The best protection is to avoid the threat.
